Recycling Bins

For the past 3 weeks or so, I have been working on customizing a recycling bin for Global Inheritance, who promote recycling and clean water resources.  Also the art would be showcased at Coachella's music festival as a functional art piece.  So below is some progress photos documenting it...

So originally I based off my bins (normal and mini sized) off my Halloween costumes from the following years, since i didnt have much time to complete them (3 weeks) i stuck with something i had previous knowledge of constructon.

heres a rough sketch...

So when I got picked as one of the artists, my bins arrived... "umm this seems like its gonna be a lot of work"

So I sanded it, primed it and made the add-on's with poster board to see how it would look...

Once that looks okay, i cut and bolted down the wooden walls (thanks for the tools Mike) and made a joystick and button.  Then I spray painted it all red and painted in these window areas!

More paint and details...

Its all about the details...

I spent a good chunk of a night hand lettering the sign, and thats a good stopping point.

next up I sketched out some of the toys that would be inside the windows. I based them off a music festival with some of them representing the bands in this years coachella. like a milk carton for blur, a pepper for red hot chili peppers and more.

blocked in the overall shapes...

base colors and some shadows...

Give it a little spit shine and its finished...

Last minute addition, LIGHTS! And there we have it...

So after that, I quickly put together my mini bin.
Cut out the windows and painted it white.

We found a small action figure at the dollar store that fit perfectly in the bin. Big thanks to my girlfriend for using her sewing powers to stitch his tiny rob and turban.

So with a lot of details, it came out great!

So last Thursday was a little show downtown LA, where all the bins were on displayed and artists interacted!
Here's the flier...

Me and my claw...

A little new doc filmed me and the cans...

And there we go, all in a months work. Already brainstorming ideas for next year!
